Eight firms win £1.6bn London major projects framework

Aaron Morby | Fri 13th March | 7:01

Eight firms are understood to have secured places on a new London major projects framework that will be used to deliver jobs worth more than £10m.

What exactly is a fire door?. In basic terms, it's a door that is designed to stop a fire spreading to other parts of the building. When used as part of a property's protection scheme it should allow the occupants to reach safety. Clicking the link will show you more information and some really low online prices on Buy Internal Fire Doors UK.

The new framework forms part of the wider umbrella Southern Construction Framework, which aims to draw together a panel of contractors covering public works in the south of England.

The largest of the three panels is the London lot, estimated to be worth up to £1.6bn over four years on past spending records.

Local authority backers expect to call upon the firms to bid for mainly education projects.

Although buildings for the emergency services, health services, civic offices and housing are also within its scope.

The framework has been designed to dovetail with the London construction programme major works frameworks agreement, which covers smaller projects.

An announcement also covering the remaining south east and southern lots is expected shortly.

Stephen Fry Lives Out Married Life on Twitter

Screen Shot 2015-01-22 at 10.08.33Although the unconventional couple have encouraged many to pass comment on the age gap between Stephen Fry (57) and partner and Elliot Spencer (27), it seems that they are getting along with married life just fine, posting a series of intimate images and tweets.

This is what we love about Twitter, with the social platform giving us access to our beloved stars. Where many years ago we felt very much detached from such celebrities we are now provided with a window, seeing directly into their personal lives.

Marrying just 10 days after announcing their engagement the couple understandably wanted to share every moment with their followers, ensuring we were not left out of anything during this incredible juncture in their lives.

It seems that Twitter has played a big part in the couples relationship, with Stephen Fry in particular giving us a step-by-step update of their life as a married couple. Moments after the ceremony Fry tweeted the following:

Screen Shot 2015-01-22 at 10.08.57

"Gosh. @ElliottGSpencer and I go into a room as two people, sign a book and leave as one. Amazing."

Although very sweet we wonder how Elliot felt about Stephen being on his phone during the reception. If you've been to a wedding or celebration where there was a party photo booth then you'll appreciate how popular, and often addictive the booth can be with the guests. If you haven’t seen one before don't worry, a photo booth at your event adds something completely original and special to the day and the photographs that are produced can be cherished for many years to come. If you are planning a wedding or party any time soon clicking on the following link will get you a heap of good information on Torquay Photo Booth Hire. The star also tweeted an image of the two signing the marriage certificate, accompanied by a doll of Oscar Wilde. With Fry having such an affinity with Wilde and his troubles as a gay man we felt the unusual witness to be a great touch.

The couple were congratulated by thousands over Twitter, with many famous faces illustrating their happiness for the QI quizmaster.

What do you think, were the series of tweets a bit too much?

Bouygues profits slide as pressure grows

Bouygues, the French construction, media and telecoms conglomerate, reported a slide in operating profit in 2014 as it battled tough economic conditions at home and fierce competition in the telecoms sector.

The Paris-based group, which owns Bouygues Telecom and TF1, the country's largest private broadcaster, said that current operating profit, which excludes charges and capital gains, during the past year was EUR888m, broadly in line with analysts' forecasts but sharply down on a restated EUR1.3bn during 2013.

The group described the environment as "competitive" but said that all of its business groups would prioritise a return to growth in 2016 following a year that would "remain challenging".

Martin Bouygues, chairman and chief executive, said in a statement: "I'm confident in the ability of each of the group's business segments to reinvent itself."

Group shares were at EUR36.13 in afternoon trading on Wednesday, 1.9 per cent higher than the previous day's close. The stock has gained 19.4 per cent over the past year.

Bouygues said that 2014 sales were EUR33.1bn, unchanged from the previous year. Analysts had predicted sales of EUR33bn, according to a company-compiled consensus.

Bouygues Telecom, the country's third-largest mobile operator, said that it had added 73,000 mobile customers during the past three months of the year to reach 11.1m subscribers. That was just 22,000 down compared with a year earlier -- a much slower loss rate than during 2013, when the division lost a net 108,000 subscribers.

The figures came after the division last year said that it would slash more than 15 per cent of its 9,000-strong workforce to stay alive in one of Europe's most competitive markets.

Almost a year ago, the division unveiled a triple-play package of fixed-line, internet and television for EUR19.99 a month, undercutting the closest rival by as much as EUR10 as it sought to expand a price war in the mobile market into fixed-line and internet.

On Wednesday, the division said that it ended 2014 with 2.4m fixed-line customers, a net gain of 415,000 compared with a year previously. "Bouygues Telecom continued to implement its transformation plan in 2014," it said in a statement.

In spite of a damaging price war, as well as its attempt and ultimate failure last year to acquire rival SFR from Vivendi, Bouygues Telecom insists that it can survive alone. Only last week, amid rumours that European cable group Altice was preparing to make an offer, Bouygues said that it was not in talks with anyone over the possibility of a sale.

Balfour Beatty sells Thanet windfarm transmission system stake

The Thanet windfarm off Ramsgate, Kent. Photograph: Gareth Fuller/PA

Balfour Beatty has sold 80% of the transmission system for a windfarm off the coast of Kent to an infrastructure investment fund.

Fire doors are fitted with an intumescent strip along the sides and top of the door or door frame. This seal lies dormant during normal use, but expands with extreme heat eliminating the gap between the door and its frame and thus creating a barrier against fire and noxious fumes. Clicking the link will show you more information and some great online prices on Buy Oak Glazed Fire Doors.

Sale of the stake in the Thanet offshore transmission project (Thanet Ofto) to Equitix will release £40m to Balfour Beatty.

Thanet Ofto connects the 300MW Thanet windfarm to the onshore transmission grid. The farm produces enough electricity for about 200,000 homes a year from 100 turbine generators.

Balfour will continue to operate and maintain the system under a 20-year licence. The company started work on Thanet Ofto after it was named preferred bidder in 2010. The deal was completed for £164m last December but Balfour Beatty said that sum included the contract to operate the facility.

Balfour Beatty last month increased the estimated value of its infrastructure investments to £1.3bn from £1.05bn in June 2014 as part of a business review under its new chief executive, Leo Quinn. He took over after a string of profit warnings caused by project overruns, rising costs and underpricing of contracts.

Quinn said: "This disposal validates the directors' valuation of the investments portfolio, which was updated last month, and clearly demonstrates the investment business's ongoing ability to deliver significant value for the group.

"The Ofto sector remains a key market, which is why we have retained 20% ownership in Thanet, and we look forward to working with our partner, Equitix, to ensure the long-term success of this project."

A spokesman for Balfour Beatty said it was normal for the company to sell stakes in projects to release funds for further investment while retaining operation and maintenance work.

Private sector boosts 2015 housing registrations

Rolling quarter housing registrations in 2015 up 13% on previous year

The NHBC today has released figures indicating that the first housing registrations of 2015 are contributing to a rolling quarter rise of 13% on the same period 12 months ago.

Last month the NHBC reported that there was a 9% increase in the overall volumes of UK homes registered during 2014, with the figure totalling 147,015 compared to 135,344 in 2013.

This good news has continued today with the news that the rolling quarter figures are on the rise, though month on month figures decreased slightly. When compared month to month the January 2015 housing registrations totalled 11,390, a decrease of 2% when compared to 2014. Public sector housing was responsible for this as there was a decrease of 22% - a total of 2541 in January 2015 compared to 3,237 last year. Private sector housing softened the blow however with 8,849 new private housing registrations, a 5% increase on last January's 8,408.

The decrease month on month has not, so far, created a cause for concern when looking at the polling quarter figures though. Overall rolling quarter totals, from November 2014 to January 2015 show 35,836 new housing registrations in the UK, an impressive increase from the 31,852 for the corresponding quarter from 2013-2014. Private sector housing was again responsible for the majority of this figure with 27,881 housing registrations, an increase of 23% on the 2013-2014 22,612 figure. Public sector housing again saw a decrease during this rolling quarter with 7,955 new homes registered, a 14% decrease on the 9,240 reported during November 2013 to January 2014.

Commenting on the latest registration statistics, NHBC Chief Executive Mike Quinton said: "Following on from our annual registration figures, the rolling quarter shows that the overall new home volumes are ahead of 12 months ago, with the private sector quite clearly the main driver of growth. Even though January was slightly down we must remember this is after the extremely strong figures for December.

"We anticipate an important couple of months in the run-up to the General Election with housing likely to be at the forefront of political debate in an effort to increase overall levels of new homes that the country urgently requires."

Service celebrates being shortlisted for award

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is celebrating after being shortlisted for a prestigious national award.

"We are really proud to have been shortlisted for this national award and have been told that we were up against some very strong competition from other organisations. We trialled, tested and developed the ST15 in Staffordshire and it has attracted attention from fire and rescue services up and down the country."

Rob Barber - Director of Response

The Service is one of three organisations to be shortlisted for the Innovation Award 2015 category of the Improvement and Efficiency Social Enterprise awards.

Executive Director/Deputy Chief Executive Rebecca Bryant and Chair of the Service Improvement Committee Councillor Terry Finn will be attending the high profile event at Church House, Westminster, on March 4.

The Service has been recognised for the 'ST15' misting branch which forms the nozzle of a firefighting hose.

The nozzle is being sold by international company FireBug, which teamed up with the Service in 2013 to develop and produce the tool. It encapsulates science to use minimum water while achieving maximum results. It is the most water efficient nozzle on the market today and is approximately 65 per cent more efficient than other comparative nozzles.

The ST15 is also helping to boost the local economy as it is manufactured in Newcastle under Lyme.

Rob Barber, Director of Response, played a key role in developing the ST15.

He said: "We are really proud to have been shortlisted for this national award and have been told that we were up against some very strong competition from other organisations. We trialled, tested and developed the ST15 in Staffordshire and it has attracted attention from fire and rescue services up and down the country.

"The feedback we have had from our crews has also been incredibly positive and we are confident that the technology will improve levels of firefighter safety which is one of our top priorities."

Areva warns of EUR4.9bn full-year loss

The existing Hinkley Point B nuclear power station near Bridgwater in Somerset©Bloomberg

Hinkley Point B nuclear power station in Somerset, UK. Areva has a 10 per cent stake in the project

Areva, the French nuclear group, on Monday issued its fifth profit warning in seven months, saying it expected to report a EUR4.9bn loss for 2014 as cost overruns ballooned on key European projects.

The annual net loss -- due to be the largest the state-controlled group has ever recorded -- comes as Areva works with the French government on the details of a state-backed rescue package, according to people familiar with the situation.

More

On this topic

IN Energy

Areva's new chief executive Philippe Knoche is due to present on March 4, when full-year results are published, his strategy to reduce the group's large debt load and restore it to profit.

Areva has not sold a new nuclear reactor since 2007 and has been grappling with fierce competition from US, Russian and South Korean companies. It is also contending with weaker demand for nuclear energy following the Fukushima disaster in Japan.

Areva has been hit by cost overruns on its flagship Finnish Olkiluoto 3 reactor, which is due to come online in 2018, 10 years behind schedule. The project has so far been the subject of EUR3.9bn of impairment charges -- with analysts expecting more writedowns at the group's full-year results.

In a statement on Monday, Areva, which has a 10 per cent stake in the Hinkley Point nuclear project in the UK, said its 2014 impairment charges were also related to its new French uranium conversion plant Comurhex II.

The company also warned of further provisions on renewable energies contracts, having already incurred charges of EUR373m on its discontinued solar business.

Areva declined to comment on a possible state bailout. People close to the matter said a rescue package had not been finalised.

Shares in the group, which fell 2 per cent on Monday, have halved in value from the beginning of last year.

Areva started the year with a new senior management team aiming to turn round the fortunes of the group and convince the French government, which has an 87 per cent stake, to come to the rescue of the company.

Mr Knoche, Areva's former chief operating officer, became chief executive and Philippe Varin, former head of PSA Peugeot Citroën, has become chairman.

At Peugeot-Citroën, Mr Varin negotiated a EUR3bn rescue package for the struggling automobile manufacturer involving Chinese carmaker Dongfeng and the French government.

Earlier this month Jean-Bernard Lévy, chief executive of Areva's key customer EDF, squashed rumours that the French power utility had plans to take a stake in some of the business units of Areva.

Areva said earlier this month that further project writedowns, combined with some increased provisions relating to new regulation on nuclear decommissioning, would cause the group to "significantly downgrade" its net income for 2014.

Balfour Beatty closes wind power deal

Balfour Beatty has completed its acquisition of a £352m Welsh offshore transmission project, just one day after its new chief executive outlined early turnround efforts for the troubled UK construction group to boost profitability.

Leo Quinn said late on Tuesday that the British infrastructure group would strip out layers from its leadership team and merge some operations and squeeze more savings from suppliers as part of its efforts to transform the business after several profit warnings.

"The group's recent trading makes it imperative to gain early momentum in our transformation plans," said Mr Quinn, adding: "While further challenges remain, there are clear opportunities to achieve improvements in cash generation and profitability in the near term."

More

On this topic

IN Construction

The transformation strategy -- dubbed Build to Last -- comes just weeks after Balfour was forced to take a £70m hit to the profits of its UK construction business following a review of its books by the accountancy firm KPMG.

Six profit warnings in two years, coupled with boardroom turmoil and managerial changes, have weighed heavily on the UK's biggest listed construction group by sales, with shares losing a quarter of their value in the past 12 months.

Fire doors are supplied in a number of ratings each of which indicates how long the door can resist fire and heat. The minimum rating is FD30, offering 30 minutes fire resistance. FD30 doors, be they panel or flush, glazed or semi-glazed are usually 45mm thick, compared to the standard door thickness of 35 mm. Click on the link for more information and some really low online prices on Ply Flush Fire Doors.

Mr Quinn, who joined the group in January from defence research company Qinetiq, said the programme will focus on four areas, including the strengthening of financial control and the introduction of a more disciplined approach to project bidding and risk review processes.

Balfour said on Wednesday that it had entered into joint ownership of the Gwynt y Môr project with infrastructure investor Equitix. The deal, in which Balfour has invested £28m of equity, representing 60 per cent of the equity required, will be its third sea-to-land power system.

The Gwynt y Môr project is a high-voltage electricity transmission system connecting a wind farm off the North Wales coastline to the onshore transmission grid. The £2bn wind farm is expected to be able to generate enough electricity for around 400,000 homes each year.

The assets acquired by Balfour Beatty and Equitix include three substations -- two offshore and one onshore -- and more than 80km of subsea cables. Balfour Beatty's services division will be responsible for the assets' operations and maintenance under a licence granted by Ofgem with a 20-year revenue stream.

"The offshore transmission market has a future pipeline to 2020 of up to £10bn, which represents a sizeable growth opportunity for our investments business," said Mr Quinn.

He said the transformation programme would also focus on employee retention and subcontractors by increased training investment, and the prioritisation of safety.

Balfour Beatty has already begun implementing the programme in both the US and UK. Further details of the programme will be outlined when it announces its preliminary financial results on March 26.

People urged to take extra care as 24 hour FBU strike is announced

Push the Button logo

Staffordshire's Chief Fire Officer is urging people to take extra care following the announcement of a 24 hour strike by the Fire Brigades Union (FBU).

"The number of incidents has decreased during all of the previous periods of industrial action which is in no small way due to the vigilance of our communities. Residents can continue to assist us by taking some simple steps such as testing your smoke alarms, running through your escape plan and making sure you get into the routine of turning electrical items off and shutting doors before going to bed."

What exactly is a fire door?. In basic terms, it's a door that is designed to prevent a fire from a fire spreading throughout the building. Chief Fire Officer Peter Dartford

The industrial action will take place from 7am on Wednesday, February 25 to 7am on Thursday, February 26.

Chief Fire Officer Peter Dartford, also President of the Chief Fire Officers Association, said: "We would once again urge residents to be particularly cautious while at home and on the roads during next week's strike. As always, contingency plans will be put in place and we will answer all 999 calls. We will attend life threatening incidents but it will not be business as usual for us.

This will be the14th round of strike action to be held since the dispute between the FBU and the Government began in September 2013 over pensions.

Henry Hering's photographs of Bethlem patients

In the mid-19th century, society photographer Henry Hering took pictures of scores of Bethlem patients in order to examine their faces for evidence of their mental health conditions. If you've attended a wedding or celebration that had a photo booth then you'll know how popular, and even addictive the booth can be with the guests. If you have never seen one before be assured that a booth at your event adds something completely original and special to the day and the photographs that are produced will be cherished for years to come. If you are organising a wedding or party any time soon clicking on the following link will get you a heap of good information on Hire a Photo Booth in Avon.A number of these people were photographed twice: once shortly after arriving, and again shortly before leaving. In the 1850s, when photography was young, such 'before and after' photographs must have seemed new and exciting.

Several of the patients photographed have been identified from the initials and diagnoses that appear on the mount. Hering did not photograph all of his subjects twice, and in any case not everyone recovered. Between 1856 and 1860, when these photographs were taken, Bethlem claimed to have had a recovery rate of 57%.

The photographs are part of the collection of the new Bethlem Gallery and Museum of the Mind, which opens today at the world's oldest psychiatric institution, Bethlem Royal Hospital at Beckenham, south London. Among other highlights of the collections are paintings and drawings by Richard Dadd, Louis Wain and Jonathan Martin, each of whom was a former patient; and the world-renowned statues, 'Raving and Melancholy Madness' by Caius Gabriel Cibber, (c.1676) - which originally stood above the gates of the 17th century 'Bedlam' at Moorfields.

Pictured above: Sarah Gardner, a domestic servant, was admitted to Bethlem aged 26 in August 1857 suffering from 'great mental depression'. She was discharged in October 1857.

Harper Beckham well and truly stole the show at New York Fashion Week on Sunday. All eyes were on Victoria Beckham's adorable three-year-old daughter as she turned out to support the designer as she unveiled her latest collection in the Big Apple.

The stylish youngster was as good as gold at the presentation, perched on dad David Beckham's lap on the front row as she watched her mum's show.

Harper coordinated with brothers Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz in black, wearing a cute shift dress with a white Peter Pan collar and matching cuffs. She paired the dress with thick black tights to keep out the New York chill and patent black strap shoes.

The family were sitting next to Anna Wintour. Harper was seen gazing at the US Vogue editor, widely considered the most important woman in fashion, as she waited for her mum's presentation to begin.

HELLO! Online's 10 rising stars from the world of film

12 FEBRUARY 2015

Jack O'Connell's win at the BAFTAs on Sunday was perhaps one of the most deserved of the night. As the 24-year-old's star has risen over the last few years, he has gone from his understated stunning performance in indie classic Starred Up to his work on Unbroken, the Hollywood blockbuster directed by Angelina Jolie.

Lily James, Taron Egerton, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw

But Jack is one of many that we should all keep our eyes on. Joining the Brit actor in our list of the rising stars from the world of film, are Taron Egerton, Lily James, and John Boyega.

John broke out in the 2011 film Attack The Block, and along with Daisy Ridley and Domnhall Gleeson, will see his profile increase exponentially when Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens is released later in 2015.

Domnhall also plays on his Irish heritage with the romantic comedy Brooklyn in 2015, starring Saorise Ronan, while Ex-Machina, which is currently in cinemas now, already has a spot on our top ten films for the year.

Lily James meanwhile, of Downton Abbey fame, will be stepping into the glass slippers in March with the release of the live-action retelling of Cinderella, and Taron Egerton, who stars in Kingsman: The Secret Service, will take on a former BAFTA Rising Star nominee Tom Hardy in the story of the Kray twins, Legend.

Supermodel Cara Delevingne is also looking set to expand her CV in 2015 with four projects due for release, including the adaptation of young adult bestseller Paper Towns, and Pan, the Peter Pan retelling with Hugh Jackman, while American newcomer Sofia Black D'Elia will star in sci-fi drama Project Almanac before taking on the behemoth of Ben-Hur with Oscar winner Morgan Freeman.

Rounding out our feature is Nat Wolff, who will be able to give his Paper Towns co-star Cara some tips on handling fans after starring in The Fault In Our Stars in 2014, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who despite losing out at this year's BAFTAs to Jack, looks set to see her star rise even further in the coming year with three widely different films.

Remembering snowflake photographer Wilson Bentley

February 9, 2015 /Photography News/ Born 150 years ago, on 9 February 1865, Wilson Bentley was one of the first known photographers of snowflakes. He perfected a process of catching flakes on black velvet in such a way that their images could be captured before they either melted or sublimed.

Bentley first became fascinated with snow during his childhood on a Vermont farm, and he experimented for years with ways to view individual snowflakes in order to study their crystalline structure. He eventually attached a camera to his microscope, and in 1885 he successfully photographed the snowflakes. More than five thousand of his snowflake photomicrographs supported the belief that no two snowflakes are alike, leading scientists to study his work and publish it in numerous scientific articles and magazines.

Bentley also photographed all forms of ice and natural water formations including clouds and fog. He was the first American to record raindrop sizes and was one of the first cloud physicists.

He died of pneumonia on December 23, 1931, after walking six miles in a blizzard so he could photograph more snowflakes.

The daughter of Bobby Brown and the late Whitney Houston is now breathing with the assistance of a ventilator.

Here's what the Houston family had to say about the 21-year-old's condition in a statement released Monday afternoon:

"Bobbi Kristina is fighting for her life and is surrounded by immediate family. As her father already stated, we are asking you to honor our request for privacy during this difficult time. Thank you for your prayers, well wishes, and we greatly appreciate your continued support."

Sources close to the family add that Bobbi's situation remains bleak.

Our hearts go out to the Houston family, and the rest of Bobbi's loved ones during this tough time.

Their sadness must only be compounded by the upcoming anniversary of Whitney's death, which will be marked on February 11. The pop star drowned in a hotel bathtub in 2012.

Beware: Porn-Based Malware Is Sweeping Across Facebook

Beware: Porn-Based Malware Is Sweeping Across Facebook

Don't click any porn links on Facebook. Just don't. It's a good rule of thumb, but there's an extra good reason right now. There's a troubling type of porn-based malware that's apparently infected over 110,000 Facebook users in two days. And you could get the same Click Transmitted Disease.

The Facebook malware is disguised as a Flash update. Basically, you'll see a link to a porn video in one of your friend's posts. If you click on it (don't) you'll be taken to a website that may or may not be disguised as YouTube and see the first few seconds of the video. Then the video will prompt you to download a Flash update to keep watching. If you do, you'll infect your computer with a Trojan that can highjack your keyboard and mouse.

Once you're infected, the malware starts posting porn links to your Facebook wall and tagging up to 20 friends each time. Unlike blasting messages, this technique enables the malware to keep a low profile (as low as you can while posting literal porn), while also displaying itself publicly on your profile. That's evidently how the malware infected so many Facebook users so quickly.

We haven't seen this malware in action, and we don't want to. We've also reached out to Facebook to see how they're handling the issue. Regardless, you can save yourself the hassle of dealing with it if you just avoid clicking porn links on Facebook. Don't do it! In general! [ThreatPost]

Update (4:10pm): Facebook just issued the following statement:

We use a number of automated systems to identify potentially harmful links and stop them from spreading. In this case, we're aware of these malware varieties, which are typically hosted as browser extensions and distributed using links on social media sites. We are blocking links to these scams, offering cleanup options, and pursuing additional measures to ensure that people continue to have a safe experience on Facebook.
